Magdolene's Grotto and Thursday Sept 7th Wrap -up

Today was a work day. We touched base and shared tips throughout the class period and mostly tried to have all 6 heads at least started.

Tips: Slip/Score and attach well. Remember all you learned in intro to ceramics and push a range of techniques as well as concepts and textures. If you do not have reference images then you are making everything up from imagination and memory... this assignment is about the copy (doppleganger) and the copy (learning by copying from life or an image). Below is a random post I found on doppelgangers. Really have fun with conceptually what this could mean. There is still time for all of your ideas to evolve and get stronger.

Porcelain is less forgiving and not always happy to be hand built with. Make sure to work wet when scoring and attaching. It's not fond of slab or coil building but is my favorite for carving.
Try things out and record progress in terms of failures, success and discovery in your sketchbook

In fiction and folklore, a doppelgänger or doppelga(e)nger (/ˈdɒplˌɡɛŋə/ or /ˌɡæŋə/German: [ˈdɔpəlˌɡɛŋɐ], literally “double-goer”) is a look-alike or double of a living person, sometimes portrayed as a paranormalphenomenon, and is usually seen as a harbinger of bad luck. In other traditions and stories, they recognize one’s ‘double-goer’ as an evil twin. Doppelgaenger is a german word which also means double walker.
Image result for DoppelgängerThe word ‘doppelgänger’ is often used in a more general sense to describe any person who physically or behaviorally resembles another person. In digital marketing area this has a specific meaning which is related to brand. When someone creates a negative portrait of a particular logo/brand of an entity, it is also known as doppelganger.[1]
We also unloaded the kiln with test tiles and 1" sculptures. Put them somewhere safe and covered till we revisit in a week or two to discuss surface options.

And Tomorrow go support Magdolene and see what she worked on all summer:

Grotto is a site-specific installation by our TA Magdolene Dykstra.
It opens on Friday, 5-7pm behind the FAB. Come see! In the Courtyard behind sculpture on the first floor. Be there or be square.
