Tuesday September 26th Wrap Up

Today Magdolene introduced project 3: Abstracted Body. If you missed class email her for a copy.
We also checked in about your deadline of the 6 heads due next Tuesday at the start of class. I reminded you that you have had a minimum of 40 hours outside work as well as class time on this project and if you are scheduling yourself and treating this seriously like a job this is plenty of time to complete your work.

You will not have class time on Thursday. This will be a brainstorming and work day with Magdolene for Project 3. So plan accordingly. Prioritize your goals for finishing the heads and find a way to resolve the forms by Tuesday. This Thursday we will begin our exquisite corpse drawings to prompt our abstract figures. Bring a pencil and other drawing materials.

I also showed you how to make vinegar slip and repair a crack on a piece that is drying too fast. We talked about thinking of thick to thin areas and how these are prone to cracking:

Vinegar and slip clay repair:

  1. Scrape out the clay around the crack.
  2. Mix bone dry clay (same clay body as the piece) with some vinegar and create a paste... ...knead between your fingers to get the clay closer to the stage of drying of your peice you are repairing.
  3. You can dampen the crack with vinegar if the crack is on clay that is already too dry to rehydrate.
  4. Roll the vinegar clay into a long roll and insert into the crack gently applying the mixture to the crack (over compensate a bit). Compress with your rib or a wooden tool on all sides and cover it with plastic to allow for a slow dry. Check often and watch for the crack to reappear. You may have to fill one more time for the drying rates to catch up with each other.

We also talked briefly about using wax resist to slow drying on delicate areas and the best uses of Magic Water.

The rest of class was a work period, with the opportunity to ask Margaret for help/feedback/advice.
