Tuesday September 5th Wrap-up

Yesterday artist research, sketches and photos that were due for Project 2. Most of you had great ideas and some of you had good research. But I was wanting more of you to have both. I was happy to see some of you had started your heads. You should have them all going and started carving by the end of this week. Note Porcelain is not always happy to be manipulated too much. Good for carving but I wouldn't coil or slab. Try your best to attach parts when wet. Always slip and score with a fork whichever clay body you are building with. Paddles are your friend for forming but also compressing and making the form stronger. Over doing your craftsmanship is better than wishing you did...
To those of you who did all of the assigned homework including your test tiles, thank you.

Now that you know what I expect for round table research we will continue this way for all projects remaining in the semester. In the future anyone who does not have sketches and research will be skipped. Keep pushing your ideas and yourself. Try to push facial expression, gesture and ways of making as well as texture and how your head hits the ground plane. You are capable of so much.

Remember to keep your heads around 6-8 inches and you will have plenty of time. Our calendar is very tight this semester so stay on top of all deadlines. For Project 2 slipped greenware heads are due Tuesday September 25th.

Lastly we put slip and oxides on our test tiles and loaded into the kiln with your 1" body parts. The kiln was set off and should be ready to unload tomorrow. Here is a fun link to many types of test tiles. I hope you will start to make your own for each project and realize how important a tool they can be. As always write everything you do on your test tiles down in your sketchbook so that you can repeat the surface again.

See you all tomorrow.
