citation#1:
Fox began her figurative work at a time when abstraction was rampant. Judy Fox's work focuses on the human form, and as far as her website shows- many of these forms are "feminine," many are prepubescent, and all are nude. Her work flaunts a hyperrealism with a whimsical quality. Take her Venus for example: here we have a nude woman, and caught in what seems a moment of surprise, displaying a touch of "coyness" as though she was caught mid motion of covering her odds and ends. This is a "coyness" often associated with the "male gaze" in historical art. Furthermore, the face of the Venus is obstructed by an ornate basket

woven hair style, which adds to the idea that this individual's body is more significant than the individuals's identity.

Like Venus, much of Fox's work focuses on the feminine mystique. Snow White and the Seven Sins is a prime example of this. In this installation a nude Snow White is lying atop a glass case seemingly peacefully asleep; and around her are writhing wormlike genitalia which possess a predatory energy.

Judy Fox works at a nearly life size scale. As we all know this is no easy feat while working in ceramics. Fox achieves stability through a haphazard rigging holding up the clay as it dries and stabilizes itself. Supporting clay walls fill the pieces.
